Group Therapy Program

What is Group Therapy?

Group therapy is a type of psychological treatment where a trained therapist facilitates discussion and interaction between a small group of individuals with similar issues. The purpose of group therapy is to provide a supportive and understanding environment where members can share experiences, feelings and insights.
Mental health is a complex topic, and it can be difficult to know where to turn for help. At Greater Boston Behavioral Health (GBBH), we understand this struggle and offer mental health services—including group therapy—that are tailored to meet your individual needs. Our group therapy program is an integral part of our approach to treatment. While individual therapy sessions provide a safe space to explore things like past trauma and individual goals, group therapy provides an opportunity to practice new skills in a supportive environment and build a network of support. About Group Therapy in Mental Health Treatment

Group therapy sessions typically last between 1 to 2 hours and occur once or twice a week. Groups are often focused on a specific mental health issue like depression, anxiety, addiction, or relationship problems. Members commit to attending regularly scheduled sessions for a set period of time, often 6 months to a year.

The group is led by a trained and licensed mental health professional who sets guidelines, monitors interactions, and helps members process their experiences. Members are encouraged to be open and honest with each other while respecting each other’s privacy outside of group meetings.

Our group therapy programs are led by licensed psychologists and social workers with extensive experience facilitating groups. Groups are kept small to allow for meaningful interaction and participation. Some of the group therapy options we offer include:

  • Depression and anxiety support groups
  • Stress management and coping skills groups
  • Trauma recovery groups

What to Expect in Mental Health Treatment

Once enrolled in a group therapy program at GBBH, you can expect sessions to occur regularly and last approximately one to two hours each time. Depending on the size of the group and the number of participants attending each session, conversations may vary from week to week, but overall will focus on topics like managing emotions more effectively or building healthier relationships with peers or family members. Additionally, it is important that all members feel comfortable participating in conversations without being judged by other participants or the therapist leading the session; as such, every effort will be made by our team to ensure all participants feel safe throughout their experience at GBBH.

Starting group therapy for the first time can be intimidating. We understand this and want to make sure you feel comfortable in the program. Our team is dedicated to providing a supportive environment that allows each member of the group to feel heard and respected. We also encourage open communication between all participants so everyone can benefit from the experiences of others in their group.

The Benefits of Group Therapy for Mental Health

There are many benefits of group therapy over individual therapy. Participating in group therapy can:

  • Reduce social isolation. The group setting allows members to meet others facing similar challenges and gain support from them.
  • Provide new perspectives. Hearing how others handle similar situations can offer new solutions and coping strategies.
  • Teach social skills. Members learn effective communication, conflict resolution, and other interpersonal skills through interacting with the group.
  • Promote a sense of belonging. The group provides a supportive community that members can turn to for acceptance and understanding.
  • Motivate change. Members spur each other on toward improving their mental health and making positive changes in their lives.

Every step of the journey to mental health is important, and group therapy can be an invaluable part of this process.
